Sales Questions

What do you mean when you say 'free domain name'?

We will register a domain name without cost to you for a one year period when you prepay for a year or more. It's our way of saying thank you for being our customer. Provide us with a domain name of your choice, and a domain name you have already verified is available online, and we will register it. This process can take up to 72 hours after payment has been verified for your hosting account. You can verified if the domain name you want is here.

What does 'add-on domain' mean?

An add-on domain refers to a second, third, etc... domain name pointing to the same web hosting account. You can have each domain point to a separate directory within your account effectively having distinct websites (one for each domain name). You must register these domain names and pay for them separately.

What is a 'sub domain'?

A sub domain refers to a name that is an extension of your existing domain name. i.e. sales.yourdomain.com. A sub domain has it's own public_html folder under your main web account thereby allowing you to maintain a neat separation between different areas of your website. A sub domain shares your hosting account's disk space and available bandwidth. Large companies use sub domains to brand different parts of their site. i.e. computers.pennypincher.com and to handle various departments like billing, sales, or tech support.

Why would I park a domain name?

Whenever you register a domain name it must be linked to something or somewhere. You may have typed in some domain names that displayed a page that said coming soon, or under construction. These pages were most likely 'parked' by their owners to be used at a future date.

What is the difference between data transfer and disk space?

Data transfer refers to the amount of bandwidth your site uses up in order to display your web pages to the world. Everytime someone visits your website, pages and images are transfered from our servers to your clients' computer. This transfering of data costs money. The amount of data transfer determines how much traffic can visit your site. If you anticipate lots of traffic to your website, you would need to consider adding more data transfer to your package. Disk space on the other hand refers to the amount of storage you have available on our server to store your pages, images, mp3 files, etc... Keep in mind that email accounts will also take up some of your storage space.

What happens if I exceed my allotted bandwidth for the month?

Our packages come with an allotted data transfer limit for the month. If you exceed your allocated bandwidth for the month, you will be charged 1 cent per MB over your limit. This charge is OVER AND ABOVE any monthly or yearly amount you have paid to us. It is your responsibility to monitor your available bandwidth. Our servers will send you an email notice when you have used up more than 80% of your available bandwidth for the month. If you have exceeded your bandwidth, you can either choose to either pay for your overage, or to suspend your account until next month.

What kind of uptime guarantee do you provide?

We provide you with a 99% uptime guarantee.

Do you charge a setup fee?

No. Right now we are not charging a setup fee.

Can I post adult content on my website?

No. We do not allow any adult content of any kind on our servers. Doing so will result in immediate suspension of your account until either the content is removed or the account is terminated.

Do you allow me to host an IRC server on my account?

No. We do not allow any IRC server or hosting on any account on any of our servers. Doing so will result in the immediate termination of your account, no exceptions.

Do you offer shell access to my account?

No. Instead we offer an easy to use web based interface through CPanel. If you need something installed or adjusted via a shell, we would be glad to accomodate you if at all possible.

What are PHP, MySQL and PYTHON?

PHP is a popular web scripting language that allows a webmaster to add dynamic server side features like database access, form validation and other goodies. Our servers are always kept up to date with the latest stable version of PHP.

MySQL is a popular open source database that is most often paired with PHP. A database allows you to store data that you can then display on your web pages or make available in other ways.

Python is an object-oriented programming language that has gained in popularity in recent years. It offers much of the same benefits that PHP offers but is built from the ground up to be object-oriented. Both PHP and Python are easy to use and learn.

Do you offer web design services?

We offer basic web design. If you have a design that needs to be transfer to html, we would be glad to help you. At this time. We do not offer any programming. We also offer our YowlingBuilder product as an excellent and cost effective web design tool.

Refund Policy

Can I get a refund if I am not satisfied?

We provide our customers with the standard 30-day money back guarantee. If you have chosen our one year package, we will deduct the cost of the domain name from the amount we will refund to you. You get to keep the domain name and transfer it to another company if you wish.

Billing Questions

I don't have a credit card, do you have another method of payment available?

With Paypal, it is possible to pay from your bank account. You need to setup a new Paypal account (if you don't have one already) and verify your bank account with Paypal. Once that is done, you can send money to our paypal email account - billing@yowling.com.

Another option for Canadian Customers is to use an interac email money transfer. How do you do this? Simple, just log into your bank's online banking interface, look for something like 'Payments & Transfer Funds' click on it, one of the options should be to make an email money transfer. If you choose this method of payment, keep in mind that you will need to send us the answer to the secret question they ask you to input. Send this secret answer to billing@yowling.com

Account / Support Questions

How long do I have to wait before I can get access to my account?

We will activate your account after we get confirmation that your payment was approved. This usually takes anywhere from a few hours to as much as a day. Keep in mind however, that it can take anywhere from 24-72 hours before your chosen domain name is active on your account.

I've just registered my domain but when I type it in, it just gives me an error! What's wrong?

Domain names are the names assigned to IP addresses to make it easier for us humans to find a particular website on the internet. If we had to remember the IP address for sites like walmart.com, microsoft.com or ebay.com with long IP addresses like 12.34.32.132! In order to get a domain name to point to an IP address whenever anyone in the world types in the domain name, large databases of domain names are kept in a number of centers worldwide to make it faster and easier for people to access your domain locally. Because of all of these computers and all of this overhead, it can take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours before your domain name will work in your browser.

What is a nameserver?

In this process of looking up which IP address corresponds with which domain name (see question above) Nameservers are queried to resolve the domain name. Nameservers are usually located locally at the server that hosts the domain name. For example the yowling nameservers are ns1.yowling.com and ns2.yowling.com. When you initially register a domain name with a domain registrar, you will be required to enter our nameservers BEFORE your domain name will be able to work with the account you purchase with us.

What are the names and IP's of the Yowling nameservers?

Yowling has two main nameservers. These are as follows: ns1.yowling.com, ns2.yowling.com

What is SPAM and what is your policy regarding SPAM?

SPAM refers to unsolicited commercial email (UCE) and it is the practise of sending emails to a third party that is not specifically requested by that third party. THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR IS NOT ALLOWED ON OUR SERVERS. Spam is considered serious enough that many countried including the United States are in the process of passing laws that will consider it a crime to send SPAM. SPAM costs the internet industry billions of dollars per year in wasted bandwidth and labor costs related to cleaning SPAM off of networks and computers. SPAM is popular among some unscrupulous marketing online because it costs them almost nothing to send the email compared to sending it through the postal system as direct mail. SPAMMING WILL RESULT IN THE IMMEDIATE TERMINATION OF YOUR ACCOUNT! Plus, we will bill you for the time it takes us to get our IP addresses off any anti spamming lists or any outages we suffer from our providers because of that SPAM at a rate of $250 CDN per hour! Don't even think about spamming, it isn't worth it! If you know of someone spamming using our servers, please report it ASAP at abuse@yowling.com and we will take care of the matter promptly.
